October 2026 Theme: Birthday, Gratitude, and Wishes
How do you celebrate somebody's birthday in your culture?
I still remember learning about Dutch birthday traditions in one of my first Dutch classes: congratulating not only the birthday person but also their family and friends, sharing coffee and cake, and opening gifts and cards in front of everybody. It was eye-opening and fascinating for me.
In this workshop, I would like to introduce three dishes that were part of many birthdays during my childhood in South Korea. Together, they tell a story about birthdays, gratitude, and wishes for the future:
Pat-Chalbap (팥찰밥): Glutinous rice cooked with red beans
Miyeokguk (미역국): Seaweed soup
